Adware can be defined as any software program that automatically displays ads, and or downloads advertisements to a computer once the software is installed or during use of an application. Some adware is also spyware and can be privacy invasive. In many instances adware is set up on a computer inadvertently and may go undiscovered for some time if at all or become apparent immediately. Adware’s designed purpose is to place particular advertising in front of a computer user in the hopes of making a sale.
Not all adware is bad or surreptitiously installed. Quite a few adware applications are part and parcel of programs that the a person installs on their computer which may have a no cost variant which shows advertisements in lieu of a subscription fee. An adware application that is quite popular is WeatherBug which is a weather monitor for your computer that can be downloaded for free. Users of WeatherBug can stop seeing advertisements by simply paying a small annual subscription payment. Programs like these provide a wiw-win for the person downloading it onto their PC and the company providing the software as well as the advertisers. Other adware programs are not so nice. Quite a few of these applications been classified as Malware due to the approaches employed to trick people to install them on their computers and the way they operate when installed.
One popular technique is to bundle the adware with a desirable program which is then installed simultaneously with the program. Programs like these can monitor your internet activities and report what it learns back to the people that created the software. Another technique that they take is to replace legitimate ads on websites with ads from their network.
Other adware or spyware programs have can be looked at as scareware. If you have come across ads claiming your PC is infected with viruses etc. and state that by purchasing their application it will keep them safe from these so called threats. In many cases this breed software will set itself up on the a PC without the consent of the consumer with the chief intention being to alarm people and trick them into paying for their product even though many times there is not an actual problem.
